Teenage referee attacked by trainer during kids rugby match in NSW

A teenage referee has been taken to hospital after being punched in the face at a junior rugby league match in Sydney’s south.

The 15-year-old boy was reportedly refereeing an under 12s rugby match between the Engadine Dragons and Gymea Gorillas on Anzac Avenue in Engadine at around 1pm when he was attacked.

It’s alleged the teen was punched in the face by a 34-year-old man.


It’s understood the man is a trainer for the Gymea Gorillas.

The 15-year-old ref was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick in a stable condition for further treatment.

The 34-year-old was arrested and taken to Sutherland Police Station where he has since been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear before Sutherland Local Court on Wednesday 22 June.
