Teens caught after crime spree in stolen car

A GROUP of teenagers on a joy-ride in a stolen ute were arrested in dramatic scenes on the Gold Coast overnight.

Police spotted the white Crewman utility in Merrimac around 10pm on Thursday and followed closely without initiating a pursuit.

It’s alleged the same driver evaded police around three hours prior. A registration check of the vehicle confirmed it was stolen from a Mount Tamborine address on Tuesday.

Officers kept their distance as they followed the ute while it entered the Pacific Motorway, which at one point was estimated to be travelling at around 140km/h through northbound roadworks at Mudgeeraba.

Stingers were then deployed on Robina Parkway as the driver exited the M1 around 10.30pm.

The 17-year-old male driver hit the brakes and avoided the spikes, but all four occupants – two boys and two girls aged 15-17 – were detained as they ran from the car.

A number of stolen credit cards were also found in the ute. Police are yet to lay charges.
