Tennis star tests positive to COVID in Sydney ahead of ATP Cup

Canadian tennis star Denis Shapovalov has tested positive for Covid-19 after touching down in Australia.

The 22-year-old confirmed the news in a post on social media on Sunday morning.

“Hi everyone, just wanted to update you that upon my arrival in Sydney, I tested positive for Covid,” Shapovalov posted.

“I am following all protocols, including isolation and letting the people who I’ve been in contact with know.”

“Right now I am experiencing minor symptoms and look forward to getting back on the court, when it is safe to do so.

“Thank you in advance for your support and wish you all a safe and happy holiday.”

Shapovalov is now in doubt for the ATP cup, which begins in Sydney on Saturday.

It comes amid reports World Number One Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the event, casting doubt over his appearance at next month’s Australian Open.

The 34-year-old is yet to reveal his vaccination status, despite a mandate by the Victorian Government and Tennis Australia.
