TGA provisionally approves AstraZeneca booster for Aussie adults

Australia’s medical regulator has provisionally approved the AstraZeneca booster shot for people over the age of 18.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration gave the green light to Vaxzevriaon Tuesday, but it was only officially announced overnight.

Despite the approval, the TGA said a person would have to consult their doctor before receiving the AstraZeneca booster.

“The third (booster) dose may be given if clinically indicated with reference to official guidance regarding the use of a heterologous third dose,” the TGA said.

“This means that the decision to receive Vaxzevria as a booster must be made in consultation with a medical professional.”

The agency confirmed that Pfizer and Moderna remain the preferred booster dose in Australia “irrespective of the primary COVID-19 vaccine used”.

“This includes for people who received the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine for their primary course,” the TGA said.
