Armed thieves on the run after smashing into Gold Coast tobacco store

A major manhunt is underway following a brazen break-in at a tobacco store in Molendinar in the early hours of this morning.

Two wanna-be thieves allegedly used a sledgehammer to smash their way into the business along Olsen Avenue around 4am on Friday.

However, their attempts were halted when the store’s security system set off smoke dispensers, scaring the pair away.

A Queensland Police spokesperson told myGC it’s believed the duo fled empty-handed.

However, the owners of the business now face another huge cleanup bill, with the break-in marking the second time the shop has been targeted by thieves in five months.

Three people smashed a car through the store in November last year in another robbery attempt.

Investigations are continuing.
