While the fire was extinguished just before 6pm, thousands of residents remained without power as the sun went down.

More than 6000 of those customers were in Ormeau and Ormeau Hills, while more than 700 buildings were blacked out in Yatala.

Power had been restored to 4,500 buildings by 6.25pm, while a little over 2400 customers were waiting to be reconnected to the grid.

Energex crews are working to divert the power around the substation and expect to have all services restored soon.
