Tobacconist employee attacked with machete in frightening hold-up

A MAN has been hit over the head with a machete during a frightening armed robbery in the NSW Hunter region.

Police say a man stormed a tobacconist at a shopping centre at Raymond Terrace just before 9pm on Saturday armed with a machete.

The 63-year-old male attendant allegedly grabbed the machete-wielding robber and a struggle ensued, during which time he was allegedly struck in the head with the weapon.


The armed man remains on the run after fleeing the store empty-handed.

The injured attendant was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Maitland Hospital, where he received stitches.

The offender has been described only as wearing dark clothing, with a dark t-shirt covering his face.
