TODAY hosts acknowledge Lisa Wilkinson’s shock departure from Nine

TODAY Show viewers and hosts have been left in shock following the sudden departure of co-host of 10 years Lisa Wilkinson.

Wilkinson broke the news in a statement on Twitter overnight, announcing yesterday was her last day on the breakfast program.

“I have some news, I’m sad to say that today was my last day on the Today show,” she wrote.

Nine confirmed Wilkinson’s departure, citing failed contract negotiations.

“Nine today confirmed we have been unable to meet the expectations of Lisa Wilkinson and her manager on a contract renewal for a further period,” the statement read.

“We express our gratitude for Lisa for her 10 years with the Today Show and are disappointed we find ourselves in this position.

“Nine will be going in another direction and will be considering our options in coming weeks and months.”

Karl Stefanovic addressed Lisa’s shock resignation first thing on the show this morning.

“Well obviously it was a very big day for us yesterday here on the show and a very big day for Lisa Wilkinson,” he said.

“We’ll have plenty more to say about that a little bit later in the program.”

It wasn’t long before the 43-year-old spoke about the situation again, whilst reading through the top newspaper stories of the day – most of which were about Wilkinson.

“For ten years Lisa has dragged herself out of bed at 3.30 am, fed the dogs and cats, put a load of washing on and come into work and sat on my left to inform you at home about what’s happening in the world,” Stefanovic said.

“For ten years she handled those brutal, brutal hours with grace, beauty intelligence and a wicked sense of humour.

“For whatever reason she won’t be doing that anymore and it was a surprise to us all. It’s safe to say we were all shocked and it will take a little while to sink in.

“So for now this, thank you.

“Mostly you go with my love, lots of love, all my love. We will see you soon, maybe after midday. Enjoy the sleep.”

Deborah Knight was called in last minute to fill Wilkinson’s spot on the program on Tuesday, however who is replacing the much-loved host is yet to be announced.

Wilkinson confirmed on social media overnight that she was making the move to Network Ten to join The Project and other hosting and editorial roles from January 2018.

It reportedly comes after Nine failed to up her salary to give her equal pay to her co-host Stefanovic.
