Elderly driver charged after hitting and killing toddler on NSW street

UPDATE @ 12.00pm: A 71-year-old woman has been charged with dangerous driving causing death after allegedly hitting and killing a 3-year-old boy in a horror accident in Sydney’s north.

The elderly driver is accused of striking the boy as he walked along Abuklea Road at Eastwood with his mother yesterday afternoon.

Despite the best attempts of paramedics and doctors to save the boy, his injuries were too severe and he later passed away at the Westmead Children’s Hospital.

Police released a statement on Thursday, confirming the 71-year-old woman has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, and negligent driving occasioning death.

She has been granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Burwood Local Court on August 14.

EARLIER @ 8.00am: A 3-year-old boy has died after being hit by a car on a suburban Sydney street.

The toddler was walking with his mother on Abuklea Road at Eastwood when he was struck by a car just before 4.00pm.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being rushed to Westmead Children’s Hospital, where he died shortly after arrival.

The mother of the boy escaped uninjured.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the boy, a 71-year-old woman, was treated by paramedics for shock, before she was taken to Ryde Hospital for mandatory testing.

Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit are investigating.
