The dog retreated to its property while the boy was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.
Police say his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
Local council and police inquiries into the incident are continuing.
It comes just days after a 12-month-old girl was mauled to death by a Rottweiler in the northern NSW town of Inverell on Saturday.
On Sunday, a 10-year-old girl was also attacked by a dog at a home in the Melbourne suburb of Berwick.
