Tom Tate pushes for Supreme Court in Southport development

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate is pushing the State Government to create our own Supreme Court, as part of a larger proposal that would cement Southport as the Coast’s CBD.

Council wants to create two large towers that would contain government offices, library and other businesses.

Recently, the Attorney General had knocked back the idea of having a Supreme Court on the Coast but Cr Tate is confident about the plan.

“This proposal would take about six months to get through Council,” he said.

“If you look at the law fraternity on the Gold Coast, they’re crying out for it.

“If the Attorney General bypasses that plan, barrister chambers wouldn’t hurt either.”

The Mayor is also confident the development would help cut down local crime.

“I wold say there will be a lot more police in the area, I’d also invest in more CCTV cameras, if anything crime in Southport CBD should drop.” he said.

The construction cost of the towers is still unknown but Cr Tate said there wouldn’t be a rates hike to get the development off the ground.
