Tomic crashes out of qualifying ahead of French Open

BERNARD Tomic’s winless streak continues as he battles to return from hip surgery.

The Gold Coast tennis star has failed to last an hour in the first round of qualifying at the Italian Open.

Victor Estrella Burgos, of the Dominican Republic, took just 56 minutes to beat Tomic who hasn’t put a win on the board since having surgery to both hips in early February.

It means the 21-year-old will go into the upcoming French Open with little game-practice.

Tomic, who is ranked 82 in the world, joins fellow Australians Lleyton Hewitt (43), Matt Ebden (65) and Marinko Matosevic (68) as our hopes in the grand slam, which starts in Paris on May 25.
