BERNARD Tomic has sailed through to the quarter finals of the Shanghai Masters after defeating France’s Richard Gasquet in a late-night nail-biter.
But it’s not an easy road ahead for the Gold Coast tennis star, who will now have to face world number 1 Novak Djokovic for a spot in the semi finals.
Tomic, ranked No.20, upset 11th-ranked Gasquet 6-3 6-7 (7-1) 6-4 overnight.

The 22-year-old’s impressive win came after compatriot Nick Kyrgios on Thursday escaped a fine for unsportsmanlike conduct after receiving a code violation during his explosive second-round exit from the Shanghai Masters.
Officials opted against adding to Kyrgios’s troubles after chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani sanctioned the young firebrand on Wednesday for accidentally swatting a ball in frustration towards a lineman during his loss to Kei Nishikori.
