With the onset of winter, it’s becoming harder and harder to keep my toddler son entertained indoors. So I’ve been searching for cafes with three specific criteria; a play area for the little man and healthy food plus good coffee for me. So after gathering mummy recommendations and a few visits ..here’s my round up of the four best cafes and play areas on the Gold Coast.
Book and a Bite in Coolangatta was by far my favorite. The owner Dirk and barista Leanne were absolutely delightful and seemed more than happy to let the kids and adults play to their hearts content in the super cool fenced play area.

My son absolutely adored the play kitchen and huge chalk board. Employees seem to have high tolerance levels and genuinely enjoy the kiddie patrons which makes this venue a welcome respite for tired or stressed out mums. Gluten free goodies and other healthy options are also available daily. Kids have their own all day menu but the staff are pretty flexible when it comes to the demanding palates of young ones.
Moving further north is Plantation House cafe located in West Burleigh. Lovely owner Jackie has crafted out a small play area at the back of the cafe. Mums can enjoy a range of super healthy meals while watching the kids play safely. For $5.90 mums can also request tailor made meals for their kids choosing from a selection of healthy, fresh quality produce.
Situated in the awesome little suburb of Nobby’s Beach is BSKT cafe. If you’re into superfoods and all things healthy; this cafe should definitely be on your to-do list.
Not as welcoming as the other cafes however the huge and colourful play area more than made up for it. Here you can have your cake and eat it as there are plenty of high chairs and seating for mums within the play area itself. Rainy days are out though as the play area is located outdoors.
And last but not least is Vivre a Vie, an organic bakery and cafe, located on the Gold Coast Highway in Mermaid Beach. If parking weren’t so limited, this would be my coffee local! All food is organic and locally sourced while the bread is baked fresh daily.
Although not a dedicated play area; I predict the secluded garden and toy boxes will be enough to keep the little ones entertained. This venue is amazingly tranquil and best enjoyed on a sunny winter’s day.
