THE Cancer Council is warning Queenslanders against unwanted weight gain this festive season, with research showing the average Aussie could carry two extra kilos into the New Year.
Failing to plan for a healthy holiday can lead to overeating, extensive sedentary behaviour and weight gain – increasing the risk of a range of chronic diseases, including some cancers.
Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said ensuring a healthy and happy Christmas was easier than many Queenslanders realised.

“There are simple habits Queenslanders can commit to ahead of the holiday season that will help keep their health on track,” Ms Clift said.
“Often the Christmas season is linked to overeating, mindless eating, a lack of exercise and spending too much time in the sun.
“Christmas shouldn’t be an excuse for us to abandon our health commitments – we should take steps to ensure we remain physically active on most, if not every, day of our holiday.
“Queenslanders will find they look and feel better by eating a healthy diet, staying active, limiting alcohol and remembering to be SunSmart while celebrating.
“We also encourage all Queenslanders to stick to the recommended alcohol guidelines of no more than two standard drinks per day.
“Remember to stay hydrated and sun safe too – Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide when the UV Index is three or above, which is usually from 7:30am on most days in summer.”
The Cancer Council has revealed the top five tips for all Queenslanders to enjoy a holly, jolly, healthy Christmas:
- Snack well. Have a healthy snack before heading to a party and serve fresh fruit at yours.
- Walk it off. Avoid the temptation for a nap and walk off your food instead.
- Be wary of your weaknesses! Know your unhealthy habits and take steps to avoid them.
- Hydrate. Be aware of overheating, especially if you’re spending a lot of time outdoors. Slip Slop Slap!
- Learn to say no! Be confident to say no to extra food portions or alcohol. Remember, you’re saying yes to your health and wellbeing.
