Tourist fined for flooding Gold Coast apartment to get sex worker to leave

A tourist has been fined and will likely have to pay damage costs, after flooding an apartment in Broadbeach over the weekend.

The 28-year-old man was visiting from New Zealand to watch the GC600, and had organised to meet with a sex worker early on Saturday morning.

However, around 1.45am, the man was caught on CCTV in a common area in Victoria Square Apartments striking the fire sprinkler apparatuses and causing the sprinklers to activate.

It resulted in the flooding of the entire common room area and some apartment entrances on the floor.

He was arrested around 3.00am, and faced court later that day.

His lawyer told the court that he said the adult services worker was not as per the description, and that he was trying to get his money back.

He then triggered the alarm to get her to leave.

Magistrate Catherine Pirie found the damage was ‘quite significant’ and couldn’t be excused by his drunkeness.

He was fined $1500 and will likely be billed for the damages, once they are able to be calculated.
