UPDATE | Man charged after towies threatened with gun in Varsity

UPDATE 7:09AM | A man has been charged, after two tow truck drivers were allegedly threatened with a firearm in Varsity Lakes.

A 49-year-old man from Varsity Lakes has been charged with extortion with intent to gain benefit with threat of detriment.

He is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Friday.

EARLIER 6:22AM | Two tow truck drivers have been threatened by a man with a firearm while trying to take away a car in Varsity Lakes overnight.

The towies arrived at a unit complex on Varsity Parade just before 10:00PM on Thursday night to remove an illegally parked vehicle.

But just as they started work, they were confronted by two men, one armed with a firearm.

The men demanded that the operators leave the vehicle alone and threatened them repeatedly with the firearm.

The tow truck drivers, a 29-year-old and a 21-year-old man, managed to escape.

Police were called to the unit block and found two men trying to remove a wheel clamp from the car.

The men were arrested, and search of the car located three replica firearms.

Investigations are ongoing.
