Townsville Youth Detention Centre in lockdown

Young inmates have been talked down from the roof of a Townsville youth detention centre following a riot.

The facility remains in lockdown, while some of the staff at the Cleveland Youth Detention Centre were injured when more than 20 inmates went on a rampage overnight.

Parts of the facility were damaged when they hurled projectiles at staff and police.

At least two staff were hurt when objects were thrown from the roof.

A spokesperson for the centre said all the detainees were brought down from the roof around 6:30am on Friday, 12 hours after the riots began.
