Tragedy as man drowns during morning surf on Gold Coast

A man has drowned at a beach on the Gold Coast this morning.

Emergency crews were called to a location off Cronulla Avenue and Hedges Avenue in Mermaid Waters just before 8.00am, following reports of a “post-immersion” incident.

A man, whose age is not known, is believed to have been surfing when he came into trouble in the water.

It’s understood he may have suffered a suspected medical episode, however that has not yet been confirmed.

Critical care paramedics desperately worked to save him, but sadly he could not be revived.

Emergency services remain on scene with inquiries continuing.
