Tugun Bypass reopens both directions

UPDATE: The Tugun Bypass is open again both ways, following an earlier accident.

EARLIER: A truck has crashed through a guard rail southbound on the Pacific Motorway at Tugun.

The Queensland Ambulance Service said the driver did not appear to have suffered any serious injuries as a result of the accident, which happened just before 4:00am on Wednesday morning.

But the force of the collision sent the semi-trailer across the median and into northbound lanes.

Fire fighters were called to secure the fuel tank which ruptured during the collision spilling fuel onto the road.

The Tugun Bypass was closed both directions while the clean-up is completed and has just re-opened southbound.

Motorists heading north are still being diverted onto the Gold Coast Highway.  That is causing major hold-ups through Tweed Heads West where the Pacific Motorway crosses Kennedy Drive.

Southbound there is congestion back to Palm Beach.  It is also looking like a car park on Stewart Road and on the Gold Coast Highway south through Tugun and north at the exit at Tweed Heads West all the way to Stewart Road.
