Tweed Shire Mayor pushes for Council to support marriage equality

The Tweed Shire Council could throw its weight behind the marriage equality ‘yes’ vote if Mayor Katie Milne’s gets her way – including flying a rainbow flag outside the Council Chambers.

At tomorrow’s Council meeting, the Mayor will move that Council supports the Australian Government’s proposed amendment to the Marriage Act 1961. She will also ask that the Council promotes its ‘yes’ position through local media, and that they hold at least one public function to encourage the local community to also vote ‘yes’.

At least four of the seven local Councillors must support the motion for it to pass.
