Australians kidnapped by gunmen in Nigeria

UPDATE @ 9.00am: Four Australians are among five people who have been kidnapped by armed men in  south-eastern Nigeria, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has confirmed.

Local media are reporting that the group were ambushed in their vehicle, with the local driver shot dead.

All kidnapping victims are believed to be from Australian mining and engineering company MacMahon.

It is not yet known why the group were abducted and no ransom has yet been demanded.

The attack occurred just outside the city of Calabar at about 7:00am on Wednesday.

EARLIER @ 7.15am: Two Australians are among five people who have reportedly been kidnapped by armed men in south-eastern Nigeria.

Local media are reporting that the group of five, including two Australians, one South African and two Nigerians, were ambushed in their vehicle, with the local driver shot dead.
