Two charged over alleged road rage assault on M1, driver still critical

UPDATE @ February 26, 6.15 AM | TWO men have been arrested and charged after a man was seriously injured in an alleged road rage attack on the side of the M1 at Yatala on Saturday.

Police were called to the incident around 9.45pm, after the driver of a Subaru Forester station wagon was allegedly attacked by a group of people from a Toyota HiAce van.

“The two vehicles stopped on the side of the M1 between Pimpama and Yatala where it will be alleged a physical altercation has occurred,” Qld police said in a statement.

The 29-year-old suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

A 22-year-old man who was a passenger in the station wagon managed to escape uninjured.

A 26-year-old Surfers Paradise man and 27-year-old Ormeau man have since been charged with one count each of grievous bodily harm over the alleged attack.

The two men are expected to appear in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court today.

Detectives have called for anyone who may have witnessed the incident and has not yet contacted them, or has dash cam footage taken in the vicinity of the M1 between Pimpama and Yatala from around 9:30pm to the time of the incident to get in touch.

EARLIER @ February 25, 6:30 AM | A man has been left with serious head injuries, after an apparent road rage attack on the side of the M1 on the northern Gold Coast.

The man was driving a Subaru Forester station wagon, when he appears to have pulled over to the shoulder of the northbound lanes, between Pimpama and Yatala, just after 9.30pm on Saturday.

It’s believed he became involved in a fight with occupants of a white van or mini bus, which may have been carrying up to 13 people.

The man suffered serious head injuries from being assaulted with an unknown weapon by the members of the van, who took off soon after.

Emergency services arrived around 9.45pm to find the 29-year-old man with serious head injuries and he was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital.

He remains in a critical condition with life threatening injuries.

Detectives are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or dash cam footage taken in the vicinity of the M1 between Pimpama and Yatala at the time of the incident to contact them.
