Two charged after man ambushed, bashed unconscious on Qld street

A MAN has been ambushed and bashed unconscious by two men while walking down a street in Cairns.

Police said the victim was walking along Shields Street when he was attacked around 3am on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old man was repeatedly punched in the head and knocked unconscious in the brutal assault.


Police said the offenders continued to strike the man in the head as he lay unconscious on the ground.

The duo fled the scene on foot, leaving their victim bloodied and unconscious.

The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics before being transported to Cairns Base Hospital.

Police said his nose was broken and eye socket fractured in the attack.

The accused attackers, aged 52 and 40, were arrested on Grafton Street a short time later.

They have since been charged with one count each of causing grievous bodily harm.

They are both due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on May 22.
