Two injured in freak accident at Qld hardware shop

TWO elderly people have been rushed to hospital with serious head and back injuries following a freak accident in the car park of hardware store in Queensland.

The incident occurred in the car park of the Brisbane Road business at Gympie around 11.25am on Sunday.

Police said a car parked at the shop started to reverse while its male driver, a man aged in his 80s, still had his door open and one leg outside the vehicle.

As the vehicle continued to reverse, the man was dragged down and the passenger door, which was also open, struck an elderly woman and knocked her to the ground.

Both the man and the woman, whose exact age remains unclear, were rushed to the Gympie Hospital in a serious condition with head and back injuries.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
