Two killed after train wipes out car on Melbourne level crossing

TWO elderly women are dead after an express passenger train smashed into their car in Melbourne’s east.

The horrific accident occurred on a level crossing on Union Road at Surrey Hills around 4pm on Wednesday.

It’s understood the express train was approaching Surrey Hills station when it struck the 2010 black Hyundai.

Police said the car became trapped in the middle of the crossing after the boom gates came down.

Seconds later, the express train slammed into the vehicle, ripping it in two and crushing it between the carriage wheels.

The vehicle was then dragged along the tracks for around 150 metres before the train came to a halt at Surrey Hills station.

Tragically, two elderly women who had been travelling in the car were killed instantly. They were aged 71 and 73.
