It’s understood the 53-year-old was killed instantly, and despite paramedics’ best efforts to keep the 55-year-old womam alive, she succumbed to her injured and died before she could be transported to hospital.
Three male occupants of the second car were taken to hospital in a stable condition, although only two of them – a 47-year-old Wongawallan man and an 88-year-old New South Wales man – required treatment for non-life threatening injuries.
Police said initial investigations indicated the southbound vehicle made no attempts to slow down in the moments leading up to the collision.
The Gold Coast Highway was closed for more than three hours while the scene was examined and wreckage cleared.
