Two people killed after car hits tree, police say ‘black ice’ to blame

A car has lost control and careered head-on into a tree on an icy road in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range in Victoria, killing two people.

The crash happened on the Midland Highway near Daylesford, roughly 115 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, just before 8am on Saturday.

The driver and front seat passenger died at the scene, while a person sitting in the back seat was taken to hospital with only minor injuries.

While the exact circumstances of the crash are still being investigated, police say they believe black ice on the road was a contributing factor.

No other cars were involved.
