UPDATE: Fire at The Spit is now under control
QLD FES has confirmed the fire at The Spit is now under control.
Earlier: THE SPIT is being closed off as crews battle a large grass fire.
People are being told to get off the beach with Police declaring an emergent situation, from McArthur Parade in Main Beach to the eastern end of the Spit.
Everyone is urged to avoid the area.
Anyone with respiratory issues should close their windows and doors to prevent the smoke entering their home.
EARLIER: A WATER bombing aircraft is on its way to the Spit, as crews battle a grass fire.
It started on the Seaway side of the kiosk around 9am, but is not a threat to property or the public.
The blaze is in an in-accessible part of the Spit and therefore proving a hassle for fire fighters.
The windy conditions are also playing havoc and creating a large smoke cloud above the area.
