UPDATE: Husband of Australian teacher shot dead in Kenya released without charge

UPDATE @ November 1 2017 5.40am | The estranged husband of murdered Australian teacher Gabrielle Maina has been released without charge in Kenya.

Cyrus Bernard Maina Njuguna, and his cousin, John Njuguna Waithira, were taken into custody on October 23, four days after his wife was shot dead in the country’s capital Nairobi.

A Kenyan magistrate ordered the mens’ release after no charges were laid.

It’s understood Mr Njuguna and Ms Maina were in the middle of divorce proceedings.

EARLIER @ October 25 2017 6.50am | The husband of an Australian teacher who was shot dead in Kenya last week has been arrested.

Gabrielle Maina was gunned down while she walked along a road in the exclusive suburb of Karen, about 10am last Thursday local time.

Cyrus Bernard Maina Njuguna, and another man, John Njuguna Waithira, were taken into custody on Monday in connection with the shooting, local media report.

It’s understood Mr Njuguna and Ms Maina were in the middle of divorce proceedings.

Ms Maina, originally from NSW, was working as the headteacher at Nairobi’s Hillcrest Preparatory School and had been in Kenya since September 2015.
