UPDATE | One dead, another badly hurt in double shooting in Sydney

UPDATE 24/12/16 8:09AM AEDT | A man is dead and another is seriously ill in hospital after a shooting in Sydney’s southwest.

Police were called to the reserve on Cowpasture Road, Wetherill Park at around 5:00PM on Friday where they found a 20-year-old man dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

A second man, aged 18, was treated by paramedics.  He had been shot in the chest and was initially thought to be critical, later listed as stable.

An extensive crime scene was established in the park, which is being examined by specialist forensic officers.

Fairfield Local Area Commander, Detective Superintendent Peter Lennon, said Strike Force Jacoby had been formed to investigate the shootings.

“Detectives from Fairfield Local Area Command are being assisted by investigators from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, and interviewing witnesses; however, at this time we have no description of a vehicle or individuals,” Det Supt Lennon said.

“I was appalled that there were up to 10 people in the park at the time of the shooting; these are people who were going about their business, enjoying time together before Christmas.

“It is unacceptable that these people have been put at risk in what is – in reality – an incident I’d describe as gutless and appalling.”

“There will be people in the community who have information about this shooting, and I call on them to contact Fairfield Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” Det Supt Lennon said.
