US teen likely to lose foot after stepping on homemade firecracker

An 18-year-old has been seriously injured in an explosion at New York’s Central Park.

The horrifying incident, believed to have been caused by an”experiment with fireworks or homemade explosive” occurred on Sunday afternoon.

New York Daily News reports the teen was climbing rocks in the park with two friends when he stepped on a homemade firecracker which blew up.

In a press conference, police said the NYPD bomb squad is investigating and that they are still trying to work out who the homemade device belonged to.

The teen is in a serious but stable condition in hospital where he is undergoing surgery.
