POLICE have shot dead a vicious dog that allegedly attacked one of their officers during a tense stand-off with a man armed with a bow and arrow at Marks Point this morning.
Police say they were called to a unit complex on Emily Street at around 7.45am after members of the public were allegedly being threatened by a man armed with a compound bow and arrow.
When police arrived, they saw a man running into a house. Moments later, a dog ran from the house and attacked the police dog and its handler.

The officer discharged his firearm and the dog that had ran from the house died at the scene.
A 23-year-old man was arrested nearby after a short foot chase and was taken to Charlestown Police Station where he is currently assisting police with their inquiries.
The police dog handler has been assessed by NSW Ambulance Paramedics on site for non-life threatening injuries.
Fortunately, police dog Marco did not require medical attention.
Police remain at the scene and inquiries are continuing.
