Victoria’s total number of cases now stands at 20,048.

There is growing hope that tough restrictions across Melbourne could be lifted sooner than anticipated.

The rolling 14-day average of new cases in metropolitan Melbourne is now at 36.2.

That’s down from 39.3 recorded on Saturday.

However there are still 52 cases with an unknown source.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has said restrictions would gradually start to be eased from the end of the month the average number of cases over 14 days was between 30 and 50.
