Victorian Premier Dan Andrews in intensive care after fall

UPDATE @ 1.45PM | Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews is now in intensive care after a nasty fall at home in Melbourne this morning.

Scans have confirmed Mr Andrews has suffered several broken ribs and damage to his vertebrae after slipping on wet stairs.

He is expected to remain in ICU for at least the next few days.


“Cath, the kids and I are extremely grateful to the Ambulance Victoria paramedics who showed such care and kindness to our family this morning, as we are to the clinicians who have taken care of me today,” Mr Andrews said in a statement.

“Our warm and since thanks go to the many family members, friends, colleagues and Victorians who have sent messages of love and support throughout the day. Thank you.”

Mr Andrews said he would provide a further update on his condition later this week.

Deputy Premier James Merlino will take over as Acting Premier until Mr Andrews is fit to return to work.

EARLIER @ 8AM by Monique St Clair | The Victorian Premier is in hospital this morning, after suffering a fall at his home.

It’s understood Daniel Andrews was injured after a concerning fall while he was getting ready this morning.

The ABC reports that he’s had to be taken to hospital as a precaution, where he will undergo x-rays today.

Deputy Premier James Merlino is taking over duties today and has acknowledged Dan’s absence at this morning’s press conference.

“He took a fall this morning as he was preparing for work.

“He’s in hospital as a precaution, getting some precautionary x-rays.

“No head injuries, he’s fine, he’ll be back on his feet shortly,” Mr Merlino said.
