“Volatile substance” sparks evacuation of Victoria police station

SWAN Hill Police Station in Victoria’s northwest has been evacuated following the discovery of a “volatile substance”.

Police say they were flagged down by members of the public who located an abandoned car beside the Murray Valley Highway at Lake Boga around 11.15pm last night.

During a search of the vehicle, officers located a possible explosive device and a powdered white substance.

The powder was seized and the Bomb Response Unit was called in to safely remove the device.

Believing the white powder was drugs, officers took it to the Swan Hill Police Station for further examination.

The station was evacuated as a precaution at around 6.15am this morning after the powder turned out to be an “unknown volatile substance”.

Police have been relocated while the situation is made safe however are still providing a response to the Swan Hill area.

Traffic diversions are in place around the crash scene, with west-bound traffic on the Murray Valley Highway being diverted at Benjeroop-Tresco Road and east-bound traffic at Ridge Road.
