Wandering accused child sex offender freed on bail

AN accused child sex offender, who went walkabout in far north Queensland, has been granted bail.

Garry Amey was reported missing from the Cairns area on October 11, within hours of being charged with five offences, including making child exploitation material.

Despite allegedly flouting his previous conditions, the 60-year-old was today able to walk free after a Magistrate declared he was not an unacceptable risk of absconding, contacting witnesses or harming himself.

Mr Amey claims to have no recollection of where he went but was found two weeks later in water off Wangetti Beach.

His wife told reporters at the time, she had no knowledge of his alleged child sex charges.
