WATCH: Amazing close encounter for whale watchers

They’re on their way! A pod of humpback whales has popped up to say hello to a boat full of excited onlookers north of Sydney.

The whale watchers were out off Port Stephens on Monday when the gentle giants came just inches from their boat.

It’s a good indication of when the whales should be seen off the Gold Coast as part of their winter migration.

The expectant mothers head north from Antarctic waters, along Australia’s each coast, around April each year to give birth in sub-tropical waters before returning with their calves later in the year.
