The team bringing us next year’s Commonwealth Games has officially ticked another job off the ‘To Do List’, following the opening of the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre in Carrara.
The purpose-built $105 million facility will host the opening and closing ceremonies and the athletics, badminton, wrestling and weightlifting competitions.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk took a tour through the new sport precinct before declaring it officially open.

“This is a gold medal winning project for our Games, supporting hundreds of jobs and engaging local contractors,” the Premier said.
“This world-class sporting venue is part of an important legacy of community infrastructure for South East Queensland that will help attract elite athletes and prestige events to the State.”
The centre will have a test-run when it hosts the World Mixed Badminton Team Championships in May, along with the FIVB World League Volleyball competition.
