Tough border restrictions and recent lockdowns have left a number of Gold Coast businesses struggling to stay afloat, particularly those in the tourism sector.
“There’s no doubt about it, the tourism industry has been hit hard, and our operators are taking every hour and every day at a time,” Destination Gold Coast CEO Patricia O’Callaghan told myGC.
Ms O’Callaghan said it is going to take some innovative and creative thinking to support businesses through this tough time, which is why Destination Gold Coast will be rolling out a number of campaigns in the coming months.

“It’s great to see the City of Gold Coast invest over $3 million into the Play Money rewards campaign, which is all about Gold Coasters backing Gold Coast, and that’s going to see local money flowing through our tourism economy,” she said.
The $3 million program will see 60,000 vouchers worth $50 on offer for residents to redeem at a range of businesses across the city when they spend $100 or more.
“It’s really getting people out and about, incentivising them to back our local Gold Coast operators. It’s the Gold Coast community backing Gold Coast. We know its worked before, they’ve supported us incredibly up until now and I think this is that added incentive to get people spending throughout our local community.”
Ms O’Callaghan said they are also hoping to attract Brisbane residents to the Gold Coast with a new billboard campaign.
“We’ve also got 110 products and experiences currently being promoted on billboards all across Brisbane, reminding them about why it is so important to get away and enjoy everything in their backyard and that’s where the Gold Coast is rolling out that red carpet.”
