Gold Coasters are being encouraged to nominate inspirational locals and community champions for the 2022 Gold Coast Australian of the Year Awards.

Acting Mayor Donna Gates said the awards were a way to celebrate those who are making a difference to the city.

“We want to recognise those people that are changing lives and our community for the better,” she said.

“This may be someone has gone above and beyond in their career, overcome challenges in their life achievements or those who have had an impact on those around them.

“If you know someone deserving of recognition, I encourage you to jump online and nominate them.”

City of Gold Coast are calling for nominations from the public for the following award categories:

Honouring the achievements and contributions of eminent Gold Coasters who are role models for us all, contribute to making the Gold Coast great and are positive ambassadors for the region.

Gold Coast Senior Australian of the Year
Celebrating those Australians aged 65 and over who continue to achieve, inspire or make a difference within the wider community.

Gold Coast Young Australian of the Year
Recognising inspirational 16 to 30-year-olds who have accomplished great things in a particular field of endeavour.

The Gold Coast Australian of the Year Awards have replaced the Gold Coast Citizen of the Year Awards, which were previously part of the city’s Australia Day celebrations.

Acting Mayor Gates said the new awards will help to propel Gold Coasters into the State and National awards programs, coordinated by the National Australia Day Council.

“We’ve elevated the status of these awards and introduced four new categories. We’re aligning with the state and national awards to give it a bit more status than it previously enjoyed,” she told myGC.

Nominations for the Gold Coast Australian of the Year Awards close on April 17, with winners to be announced at a ceremony in June. To nominate, visit: cityofgoldcoast.com.au/gcawards.
