The episode touched the hearts of thousands of people around the world, with many taking to Sesame Street’s Facebook page to thank them for introducing a character with autism.
“We watched Julia this morning and I cried. I cried because I knew that thousands of little ones were learning about autism,” one mother wrote.
“They were learning that it isn’t scary and my son is just like them. I know he will grow up in a world that is a little bit kinder because of Julia and the work that Sesame Street is doing.”
In the episode, Big Bird asks Hooper’s Store owner Alan what Autism is.
“Autism, what’s autism?” Big Bird says.
“Well for Julia it means that she might not answer you right away,” Alan responded.
“Yeah, Julia doesn’t say a lot,” Elmo added.
“That’s right. And she may not do as you expect… like give you a high five,” Alan said.
“Yeah, she does things just a little differently, in a Julia sorta way… And she’s a lot of fun!” Muppet Abby Cadabby said.
The clip has already been viewed more than 100,000 times since being posted on Sesame Street’s YouTube on Monday.
