Update on 7 July 2017: Community consultation on the route and station option preferred for the next stage of the Light Rail closes today.
Initially the consultation was due to close on Friday 23 June.
The website set up to accept online submissions says the primary purpose of conducting consultation “at this early stage” along the project planning path is to ensure future detailed planning takes on board community expectations and issues right from the start.

Michael Hart, State Member for Burleigh, has been vocal about his opposition of the two routes since the consultation period opened.
“In the best interests of local residents, local businesses and visitors, I believe any Southern Light Rail route would be best served travelling South to Burleigh and veering right to travel down West Burleigh Road to link up with Varsity train station and travel the already marked corridor to Coolangatta airport.
“This route would see all Southern Gold Coast residents serviced and a variety of transport opportunities for visitors.”
Yesterday he posted an update on Facebook confirming he was submitting a response on behalf of over 1,500 locals sharing his viewpoint.

Earlier on 5 June 2017: Mayor Tom Tate has opened the floor to the public – calling on locals to give feedback on the council’s proposed route for the Broadbeach to Burleigh light rail route and station locations.
The Mayor completely ruled out a route along the esplanade – “I’m still not sure why that fanciful rumour started, or why,” he said – while adding that $5 million has been put aside in next year’s transport budget to get the detailed engineering design started.
“Light rail is by far the best way to upgrade our transport network and to get more cars off the road to reduce traffic congestion,” said Mayor Tate.
“In 2015 you told us you wanted light rail to head south from Broadbeach to Burleigh and then on to Coolangatta via the airport. So this consultation is part of the detailed planning for stage 3A from the existing station at Broadbeach South down the Gold Coast Highway to Burleigh.”
Community consultation runs until 5pm on Friday 23 June. Visit the City of Gold Coast’s Have Your Say website to complete the online survey or find out when the next ‘listening post’ event will be held along the proposed route.
