Will Smith reveals the reason he isn’t in the Independence Day sequel

He was the standout star in the original film, so why did Will Smith decide not to sign on to star in the Independence Day sequel?

In an interview with BBC radio, the 47-year-old revealed a scheduling clash meant he was unable to sign on for Independence Day: Resurgence.

“It was one of those things — I had a couple of films lined up, I had Concussion and Suicide Squad, and so it was a decision, timing-wise, between Independence Day and Suicide Squad,” he said.

“The world is in a place of nostalgia right now,” he added. “Specifically in entertainment, there’s such a pull for nostalgia, so it was just the perfect opportunity and it didn’t work out.”

Smith will never be able to to return to the franchise either, with his character character killed off in the sequel. At the start of the new film, viewers are told Smith’s character died in action sometime after defending the world from its first alien attack.
