Woman, 61, assaulted by knife-wielding intruder

Police are asking residents in the Kempsey area on the NSW Mid North Coast to remain vigilant after a 61-year-old woman was attacked by a knife-wielding intruder who broke into her home while she slept.

According to investigators, the woman was asleep in a granny flat at the back of a home on River Street when, at around 5.30am on Thursday, she woke to find a man armed with a knife in her room.

Police say the unidentified male attempted to speak to the woman before assaulting her and demanding property.

Terrified, the woman complied and handed over cash and two silver bracelets.

Police are still desperately trying to locate the man who fled the scene.

He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, of slim build, about 160cm tall, and was wearing a dark-grey hoodie, dark tracksuit pants and socks.

In the meantime, police have asked residents in the area to remain vigilant.
