She was treated by paramedics at the scene before being airlifted to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital where she remains today in a serious but stable condition.
In a statement, NSW Police said initial inquiries had indicated another vehicle may have been involved.
Old Maitland Road was closed for more than eight hours while officers from Newcastle Crash Investigation Unit and Hunter Valley Police District examined the scene.
Investigators are urging anyone who may have been driving through the area around the time of the crash and saw the woman’s red Ford Falcon to come forward.
Motorists are also urged to review dash cam footage.
