Woman charged over cold case murder of Sydney woman Irene Jones

NEW South Wales Police have arrested a woman this morning over the murder of Sydney woman Irene Jones nearly 18 years ago.

56-year-old Irene was found dead at a home in Lansvale on Friday November 2, 2001, after police received calls about an aggravated break and enter at the home.

It’s understood a 27-year-old woman, who was known to the victim, had run to a neighbouring property to raise the alarm at the time.

A post mortem later revealed that Irene had died from strangulation and a stab wound to the neck.

Local police and Homicide Squad detectives conducted numerous inquiries at the time but no charges were ever laid.

During an inquest into the death in 2007, the NSW Coroner referred the case to the Unsolved Homicide Unit for future re-investigation and in 2017 detectives started looking into the matter again.

Following extensive inquiries, strike force detectives arrested a 45-year-old woman outside a unit at Bondi Junction about 7.45am today.

She has been taken to Waverley Police Station, where she is expected to be charged with murder.
