Woman charged with allegedly faking cancer for money

A woman has been charged after she allegedly faked a terminal illness to scam innocent victims out of money.

Police said the 24-year-old woman set up an online fundraising page in January, claiming she had cancer.

“It’s alleged the woman stated she had bowel cancer and had been given three months to live,” NSW Police said.

The woman allegedly raised around $9000 from a number of fundraisers and community rallies, before claiming she had been cured.

Officers became suspicious of the woman’s activities and launched an investigation in September.

Following further inquiries, detectives yesterday issued the young woman with a court attendance notice for four counts of dishonestly obtain financial benefit by deception.

She is due to appear at Griffith Local Court on Tuesday 2 February 2021.
