Woman, child critically injured in horror crash

A WOMAN and child have been critically injured in a horror head-on crash in the NSW Hunter region.

Police said a car and a four-wheel-drive collided on the New England Highway at Whittingham just after 11am.

A Westpac Rescue Helicopter has been dispatched to the scene, 500m north of Range Road.


The woman driving the car and a child passenger were critically injured in the collision.

Police say the pair are being treated by a team of paramedics at the scene.


Two other children from the car are also being treated at the scene.

Police say their injuries are not life-threatening.

The male driver and sole occupant of the four-wheel-drive has been taken to John Hunter Hospital.

Police say his injuries are also non-life-threatening.

Officers from Hunter Valley Police District have established a crime scene as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The road is expected to be closed for some time, with local traffic diversions in place. Heavy vehicles are advised to look at alternative routes.
