UPDATE @ 9.00AM, by Monique StClair: Gold Coast police have abandoned hope of finding a man alive, as they continue to scour beaches for the missing swimmer.
The man, understood to be in his early 30s, went swimming with a woman in her 20s late last night. But hasn’t been seen since.
The woman’s body was discovered on the beach at Kurrawa around 10.00pm, but despite desperate attempts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Queensland Police checked the CCTV footage at the surf club and discovered the pair had gone into the water around 9.20pm.
A large scale search then began for the man, which is continuing this morning.
However, Acting Inspector John Diggle says the search is now a ‘recovery mission’.
“Rescue 500 joined in and conducted flyovers and they’ve also done flyovers this morning.
“Gold Coast water police have deployed their vessel, and are in the area at the moment, and they’re being assisted by volunteer agencies.
“Police are also patrolling the beaches with the ATVs.
“At this time, we are conducting a recovery mission. We don’t expect to find anyone alive,” Acting Inspector Diggle said in an update this morning.
It’s understood a number of Gold Coast beaches are closed this morning, with ‘dangerous surf’ signs along Broadbeach.
Acting Inspector John Diggle says the beach conditions last night were far from favourable.
“I’m told by the officer in charge of water police that some of the beaches are currently closed, and we are reassessing that as we go throughout the day.
“Very rough conditions, there were 1.8 metres swells last night, conditions for boating would have been appalling and conditions for swimming would have been very unsafe,” he said.
The search is currently focused on the area north of Kurrawa Surf Club, as the strong current last night was moving north.
Police won’t release any further details about the pair until the man’s body is found and the next of kin is contacted.
